The Diaspora School of Fine Arts

Our Mission

IOIA Inc. Arts advances a transnational model of artistic education and cultural exchange connecting Africa and its diaspora across the United States, the Caribbean, and West Africa. Through immersive, practice-based learning, it engages both traditional and contemporary art forms, with a focus on woodcarving, metalsmithing, textile dyeing, beadwork, and music. By facilitating intergenerational and cross-cultural knowledge exchange, IOIA Inc. Arts works to preserve ancestral practices while fostering new expressions of Black creativity.

Grounded in the ethos of “cradling the past, igniting the present, and imagining the future,” IOIA Inc. Arts positions art as a living archive that sustains cultural memory, affirms identity, and drives innovation. The organization challenges extractive systems that have historically limited access to African and diasporic artistic knowledge, expanding equitable cultural participation for the nearly two billion people of African descent worldwide.

Through this work, IOIA Inc. Art affirms art as an evolving legacy that bridges heritage, creativity, and future possibility.

Each year, IOIA Inc. Arts convenes a cohort of 5–10 student artists, alongside teaching artists, to participate in a 2–3 week immersive training program centered on woodcarving, fabric dying, metal works, beading, music and. more within African and diasporic cultural and historical contexts. These themed intensives are designed to integrate technical instruction with situated learning through direct engagement with master artisans and host communities.

In parallel, IOIA Inc. Arts offers supplemental programming for broader community participation, delivered through both virtual platforms and local engagements, to extend access to its educational and cultural resources.

Cohort participants are required to develop original artistic work during and following the program, reflecting their immersive learning experience. Selected works are presented in curated auctions, with proceeds directed toward supporting local artisans and contributing to the sustainability of host communities.

The organization also invites donors and patrons to engage across the full program cycle, including pre-immersion networking events and post-program exhibitions and auctions, thereby fostering a sustained ecosystem of cultural exchange, artistic development, and community investment.
